The legend of the Dragon Gate
The story comes from Han dynasty China. Carp swimming up the Yellow River reach a waterfall called Longmen, the Dragon Gate, and the few that leap it become dragons. Japan kept the story as koi no takinobori, and kept the gate in everyday speech: tōryūmon (登竜門) still means the hard test that opens a career.
